Video: Bringing the Holiday Spirit to the Cardigan Ridge Memory Care

December 7, 2017

Thank you to Cardigan Ridge for the opportunity to provide music therapy services to the residents in memory care!!  The facility looks fantastic for the holidays! This video was shared on their Facebook page today.

Music therapy can be particularly beneficial in memory care for a variety of reasons. Music activates multiple parts of the brain. If there is damage to the brain due to dementia, TBI, or stroke, we can find and utilize alternate neural pathways through music which provide us with ways to re-access speech, memories, and other abilities. The body automatically responds to music improving breathing, tension, alertness, and awareness of others. Music therapy provides a way to structure positive interactions for family and friends, which is particularly helpful when individuals are low functioning. It also provides opportunities for personal choice, successful experiences, cognitive stimulation, and reminiscence and life review; to improve mood and affect; to improve immune functioning and levels of stress; and to just have fun. To learn more on music therapy with the elderly, visit the page at the bottom of this post.
