Reframing Music Therapy: Our Work in the Context of Trauma and Healing

October 21st: 6:00 – 7:00 pm Central Time Presentation

THIS EVENT WILL NOT BE RECORDED

7:00 – 8:00 pm – Networking, resource sharing, and community building

Presenter: Jennifer Sokira, MMT, LCAT, MT-BC

Description: The Covid-19 pandemic and other traumas have reshaped the way we understand how our bodies and brains respond to adversity.  Music therapy may be a powerful resource to many who are healing, and as a baseline, this calls us to expand our understanding of how to hold space and create systems which are not harmful to survivors.  Considerations for therapist awareness and development will be discussed.

Presenter Bio: Jennifer Sokira, MMT, LCAT, MT-BC is a board-certified music therapist with extensive experience working with people with trauma-related, mental health, developmental and grief/end of life needs. Building on 7 years of supporting children, families and community members impacted by the 12/14/12 tragedy at Sandy Hook School, she is a passionate advocate for clients who have experienced trauma. The Founding Director of Connecticut Music Therapy Services, LLC, Jen also teaches with and develops curriculum for Enlighten CE’s Center for Trauma-Informed Music Therapy Practice and is an adjunct professor of music therapy at Alverno College.

50% of the donations raised through this presentation will be donated to the Together Rising.

50% of the donations raised through this presentation will be contributed to the Living Spirit Therapy Services Pay It Forward Campaign to support free or reduced cost music therapy sessions for low income, rural, and minoritized older adults in Minnesota living in private homes.
